Print Books
Print books come in Paperback and Hardback. There are several options for both, like color or black and white interiors, the type of cover, the paper type and weight, and the trim sizes (the physical size of the book, like 6" by 9").
E-Books
There are basically two E-book formats today. The first is the Amazon Kindle format, exclusive to Amazon E-readers, such as the Kindle Fire and the Kindle Paperwhite. The second format is the E-Pub format, used by other devices like the Barnes and Noble Nook, and the Rakuten Kobo. The E-pub format is also readable by most Android and Apple devices using various apps.
Oddly, to put an E-Book into a Kindle format, it's typical to make an E-Pub first.
Where will you sell my ebook book?
Your Kindle Format book will be sold on Amazon's Kindle Store, as well as Amazon.com and their various global marketplaces.
If you purchase Everywhere distribution for ebooks, your E-Pub book will be distributed to Apple Books, Google Play, Barnes & Noble, Kobo (including Kobo Plus), Tolino, OverDrive, Bibliotheca, Scribd, Baker & Taylor, Hoopla, Vivlio, BorrowBox
Where will you sell my print book?
Your print book will be sold on Amazon.com and their various global marketplaces.
If you purchase Everywhere distribution for print books, your print book will be accessible to over 40,000 Independent bookstores, Online stores, Chain stores, Ebook retailers, Libraries, and Universities.
Will my book be advertised?
The short answer is no. Advertising is separate from the act of publishing. Your book will be for sale on many platforms, depending on the publication package you choose, but there is a separate cost for marketing on every platform, separate from the publishing activities.
For example, to advertise on Amazon, you use Amazon Ads. It is a bid-based, cost-per-click system and is used to advertise any product on Amazon, not just books (they show up as those annoying Sponsored Products ads). Other platforms charge up front for advertising. With Amazon Ads, Amazon will make money from you even if you don't sell a book.
If you wish to pursue advertising on Amazon or another platform, you will need to provide funding and a budget. I will provide assets (such as images, mockups and ad design) as part of your package.
Since I am account owner on the platforms where your books are published, I would be the manager of any campaigns you wish to run, but you would be heavily involved.
Your social media connections can be a much more cost effective way to get the word out, which brings us to the next question.
Who's your audience?
If marketing was easy, all authors would be best-sellers. You need to ask yourself "who is your audience?" And how do you reach them?
There are many channels where you can reach out. Obviously social media groups you're already a part of. Author websites, blogs, and any platform where you can gain followers.
Start now! Even before you publish! It will build momentum.
Don't be shy!
What channels?
Instagram seems to be very active with new authors, but also active with communities that may be more specific to your audience.
Amazon offers free Author Pages where you can link your book to your author bio and blog entries.
Consider building an author website. It doesn't have to be expensive. Wordpress is a good place to start. It can be free, but you can also customize and make it look more professional if you're willing to spend a little more money on one of their higher tier plans. There are a lot web-building services out there.
Other book specific outlets like BookBub Partners offers E-Book marketing tools and marketing campaign tools to help reach readers.
Some channels are free and some will cost, like ads run on social media platforms, and the costs can add up quickly, so be aware.
What is an ISBN?
The ISBN is a unique identifier for a book or other book-like product (such as an audiobook) that specifies its format, edition, and publisher. Most retailers require ISBNs.
An ISBN links to essential information about your book. An ISBN enables more efficient marketing and distribution of your title.
How many ISBNs do I need?
You will need one ISBN for each edition and format of your book. The ISBN identifies the publisher as well as the specific book title, edition and format (hardback, paperback, ePub, PDF, Mobi, Audio…).
Any variation of a book would require the use of a unique ISBN to identify it properly. This allows retailers to help the customer understand exactly which version of a title they are purchasing.
Amazon does not require an ISBN for Kindle format E-Books, but they do require an ISBN for print books.
If you only want to publish an E-Book on Amazon, you don't need an ISBN. If you want to publish a print version on Amazon, you need an ISBN. If you want Everywhere distribution of your E-Book, you will need an ISBN for the E-Pub format. If you want Everywhere distribution for your print book, the same ISBN can be used as the Amazon print book.
In short: Amazon Kindle - no ISBN. E-Pub - 1 ISBN. Print Book - 1 ISBN
What are royalties?
A royalty is the amount you, as the author, earn from the retail sale of one of your books.
A set royalty calculation is available for each distributor, such as Amazon and publishers like Ingram.
Let's say your print book has a $15.99 retail price on Amazon. And let's say your 250 page book costs $3.85 to print. Amazon's royalty rate is 60%. Which means they take 40% of the retail price, or $6.40. That means that there is $9.59 left. From that $9.59, they subtract the printing cost of $3.85. That leaves $5.74 to you, the royalty. If they sell your book for less than the retail price, because of a promotion or price matching, it comes out of your royalty.
Are the royalty rates the same for print and E-Book?
Royalty calculations are different for E-books and print books.
The expectation is that E-Books will have a lower retail price than a print book. But that doesn't mean you'll earn less of a royalty. Amazon's royalty rate is 70% minus the delivery cost.
There are no "print" fees for E-Books, but if you have a huge E-Book file size, Amazon will charge you more per download as a delivery cost.
The US delivery cost is 15 cents per megabyte. The books we've published range between 2MB and 3MB, for a delivery cost of $0.30 to $0.45 per download that will be deducted from your royalty.
What are author copies?
Author copies are simply the ability to buy your book from the printer for the print cost only (plus shipping, handling fees, and tax).
Why would I need author copies?
You can use author copies for many things. Like sending to reviewers.
Maybe you're going to have a book signing at a local library and you want to offer your book to the audience. Your cost per book is much less than retail, and you'd get all the profit.
Or you might want to give copies to your family and friends. This is probably the most common reason.
Who will own the copyright if you publish my book?
You will. As long as you are the creator of the content of your book, you owned it from the moment you set pen to paper (okay, that's a very old reference) or started typing.
If there are other contributors or authors on the book, you will share the various copyrights.
You can't use images or text from other sources without permission. Often, a license is required to use someone elses work, such as a photographer.
How do I protect my copyright?
You own the copyright, but a recent court ruling states that your work must be registered with the U.S. Copyright Office to have standing in court.
There is a process and we can help you through it.
Copyright only protects work in the U.S.
What kind of review will you do of my book?
I will not edit your book, or change your text in any way, other than to format.
If, in the process of formatting the manuscript, I find glaring errors, we'll have a conversation.
Errors are subjective. You may have colloquial spellings, phrases, and language necessary to your story.
How can I get my book proofed or edited?
There are a lot of options out there, but beware of the cost.
Book editors usually charge by the word or page. Depending on the type of editing, the cost varies. Proofreading is typically the cheapest at several hundred dollars. Copy editing and developmental editing are usually over a thousand.
To check for correctness, there are several tools you can use, such as Grammarly, ProWritingAid, and AutoCrit. All are subscription based services and they aren't particularly cheap.
They all do more than check for correctness, but be warned. They don't know your style. They will try to mold your book into a business proposal if you're not careful with the suggestions. You need to review every suggestion and make sure it doesn't take away from your style.
